The Cayuga Duck is one of very few domestic duck breeds developed in the United States. It was bred around 1850 onwards from black wild ducks from the Cayuga Lake region of New York State. It is a beautiful black duck with shiny green feathers and black legs, feet and bill. The drake is always black with varying amounts of green feathers; the female will sometimes develop white feathers as she ages, and can be almost all white by the age of 6 or so. They are a utilitarian breed of duck. That is, they are exceptionally hardy, producing meat, eggs and ducklings. They are also good at foraging for their own food. All these are very useful traits for America's early settlers. Cayugas are a useful, sturdy, all-around duck - and very attractive, too.
